How to Apply Gesso for Best Results

Applying High Quality Gesso is easy, but like everything, there is a preferred method. The correct way to go about it is as follows:

What can you paint on High Quality Gesso?
Use your beautiful imagination.

  • STEP 1 - Shake your container of High Quality Gesso until it becomes relatively thick and smooth with the consistency of melted chocolate.
  • STEP 2 - Wet your paintbrush with water. Then squeeze it dry so that it doesn't soak up excess gesso.
  • STEP 3 - Lay your canvas on a flat surface. Cover the surface with a drop cloth for easy clean up afterward.
  • STEP 4 - Pour a dollop of High Quality Gesso onto the center of the canvas and begin working it back and forth with parallel strokes of your paintbrush.
  • STEP 5 - Apply the High Quality Gesso as evenly and as thinly as possible.  Don't neglect to coat the edges of the canvas. Use a smaller paintbrush for that part of the job.
  • STEP 6 - Clean your brushes with water and allow the canvas to dry for at least an hour.
  • STEP 7 - Once the first coat has dried, gently sand it using fine sandpaper. Sanding aught to even out the surface. Don't forget to dust off any grit remaining.
  • STEP 8 - Repeat step 4, 5 & 6.  This time apply the strokes perpendicular to the first application of High Quality Gesso.  Continue adding coats of gesso until your canvas is as smooth as you need it to be.
  • STEP 9 - Allow the canvas to dry overnight.

Now you are ready to paint your next great piece of art on a canvass that can withstand the test of time.  Just imagine, people 300 years from now may be able to enjoy your work, thanks to a couple of well-applied coats of High Quality Gesso.

Gesso is the Foundation of Great Art

Never Underestimate the Value of High Quality Gesso

No matter what you create, the foundation will weigh heavily on the final product. Thus, you owe it to yourself as an artist to pay attention to detail. Especially at the beginning!

In the case of a painting, the beginning starts with a blank canvas. Your first step should be to prime that canvas with High Quality Gesso.

Apply your primer with as much care as you give to the other phases of the creative process. That first step (priming the canvas) determines much more about the final quality of any piece than many artists realize.
The foundation determines the results!

Just as you don't need socks to wear shoes; the truth is that neither do you need gesso to paint a masterpiece.

However, isn't it better to wear socks? Your feet would surely thank you, if they could talk.  Likewise, your paintings too would thank you for applying a few coats of High Quality Gesso.

A good canvass primer gives paint a smooth surface to hold onto. It also protects the canvas from breaking down over the years. A painting primed with High Quality Gesso can last for centuries. Isn't that amazing?

Why We Will Always Need Gesso

Can you paint without gesso?  The answer is yes, and NO!

While you can paint a masterpiece without gesso, it would be a mistake to do so.  The reason being you will have better control over the paint as it is applied to your canvas. That is, if you have taken the time to apply gesso.

A few coatings of gesso used to prep a surface gives it tooth.  Thus gesso gives your paint something to hold on to.

The next thing every artist should know is that gesso preserves your work. Gesso has the ability to reduce the acidity of paper, wood, and canvas. Thus ensuring that your paintings will last indefinitely. A painting on a gesso treated surface can last for centuries. How cool is that?
